The Hummingbird, part 3   November 7th, 2006

The Hummingbird, part 2   November 6th, 2006

The Hummingbird   October 30th, 2006

After Hurricane Katrina, we had a huge number of hummingbirds visit our house. Perhaps this was because we still had a feeder available.

We had one problem, though. We had been remodelling and our sun porch, which previously had clear plexiglass as “windows” did not have any windows at the time.

Unfortunately, the hummingbirds saw the relatively shady area with plants and decided to visit. When they wanted to leave, however, they tried to get out the skylight — and, of course, they couldn’t. We lost several before I was able to get some fiberglass screening and close in the sun porch temporarily.

This hummingbird almost made it…

End of the Sky Light Show   October 13th, 2006

More in the series of Storm Light effects from the afternoon of April 1, 2005. NOTE: Continuing the practice, the photos are in reverse chronological order, including within a post, since the blog will put the posts in reverse chronological order. The photo series stretches across multiple web pages.

The photo show is almost over — the sun is on its way quickly… it’s now 7:25pm (19:25).

a more calming view

Atill a few clouds and a little blue; looking away from the sun.

the face of fire

The fire in the sky takes on a personality here, with the picture I call the face of fire.

None of these photos have any post-processing, PhotoShop’ing, editing, or filters applied during or after the photo was taken, just resizing to 512×384 for posting to the blog.
The sky and trees really looked like this!

a more restful view

Another neat tree view.

fire in the sky

With the sun almost down, the light reflected from the thick cloud bank becomes fire in the sky.

These three photos are more of my favorites from this series — well, actually, I like them all <grin>
a little glow

A little glow, a little blue, and darkness

the majestic tree

Another neat tree view.

a darker view

Backlit by the sun, some of the clouds begin to close on the glow.

The Glow   October 9th, 2006

a bit of blue sky

One of my favorite pictures from this series, the tree in shadows, backlit by dark-glowing clouds, pure blue sky, bright glow and dark wispy clouds. This picture has it all.

wide view of the glow

Another view of the backlit clouds. The (earlier) picture below is a tighter zoom of the glow.

the glow, #1

Backlit by the sun, some of the clouds begin to take on a glow.

It’s still coming…   October 9th, 2006

a bit of blue sky

During some of the darkest clouds, we get a little bit of blue sky, too.

Two pines and the golden oak

Another view of the red tree and sky, showing the contrasts of light and dark — and the intereresting light effects — of the incoming storm.

weather contrasts

This is the same “red tree” as earlier, still a light effect on this normally-green tree. The wicked-looking clouds are still moving in.

Still Early in the Storm   October 9th, 2006

The Red Tree

Yes, that’s the real visible color. No, it’s not retouched and I did not use any filters on the Canon G2. That same tree was its usual shade of green a few minutes before this.

Two pines and the golden oak

Two pines and the golden oak. The gold color is from the sky — before and afterwards, the tree was green. This was April, so this was not Fall foliage (and we have two colors for leaves in Baton Rouge — green and brown).

The first view of stormy weather

With this photo, we begin to see the approaching storm as it comes wisping in…

The Eye

Is this what they mean by the “eye of the storm?”

The Sky before the Storm

Yet, in the other direction, the “golden tree” still shines, but the overall sky is becoming darker and now we have a deeper gold.
