Background: This week, Apple Computer released it’s latest operating system for its Mac computers. Officially known as OS X, version 10.4, this version has the code name “Tiger.”
At virtually the same time, Apple released a large package of updates for the previous version 10.3.9 (“Panther”).
What are the Windows-centric journalists and e-journalists saying? Since everyone knows Apple has released its latest, greatest OS now, their articles say something like “Apple has released a service-pack sized package of updates for OS X version 10.3.9, including fixes for 19 security problems.”
Well, that sounds innoculous enough — until you pay attention to the spin. Clean, objective news reporting — NOT! Two weeks ago, the answer would have been “Yes.” Today, this same simple announcement, without any reference to the fact that v10.3.9 is the old version or mention of the “Panther” code name, puts a negative spin on Apple’s newly released “Tiger” OS X.
Anyone who is not a Mac fanatic is unlikely to recognize the difference in version numbers. The rest of us can think “wow, Mac OS X has as many problems as Windows. They’re having to fix it already!”
I can rest easy knowing that the fanatic Windows press is carefully considering and presenting unbiased views of the computing world. NOT!
