OpenOffice.org 2.0 Released! October 21st, 2005

OpenOffice.org, the free software suite from the organization the same name, is now available for download as version 2.0 — not just a beta version, not a "pre-release" version — but the real thing!

OpenOffice.org includes a word processor (Writer), spreadsheet (Calc), presentations (Impress), graphics editing (Draw), formula writing (Math), and a database (Base). New to OpenOffice.org v2.0 is the ability to import WordPerfect files.

The database is a new component in OpenOffice.org, while the other functions have been included since earlier days. The file formats, through, have changed from its own specialized formats to OpenDocument XML.

Price, of course, is one of the driving forces in the market place. With a price of *FREE* and a quality product, OpenOffice.org is poised to grab market share from Microsoft's lucrative product line "Microsoft Office."
Have you noticed the cool ads now on my sites (www.TheNextWindow.com, www.TerrysComputerTips.com and www.TerryStockdale.com)? The ad at the beginning of this article is a good example. Notice the tabbed interface — and that it changes tabs when you move the mouse cursor over a different tab.

Not only do you get a picture and a description in these ads, you also get a Best Deals tab that lists up to three sources and their prices, and you can get a Search tab also – that lets you search for any item of your choice — including using model numbers and ISBN numbers.

These ads are from a relatively new web advertising company called Chitika. Their "eMiniMalls" program is designed to work in one of several ways. Initially, Chitika ads were designed to be "contextual ads." That is, Chitika would scan your web pages occasionally and then would serve ads to your site based on the content of thesite.

That's really a neat feature, if you do not have other contextual ads. However, Google's Adsense ads are contextual ads and many web sites already have Google Adsense ads on them. Google's terms forbid their Adsense Affiliates from showing other contextual ads on the same web page. Chitika solved that with their ch_non_contextual = 1; optional line in the ad script. Similarly, if you use GoogleSearch on your web site, you can not use the Chitika eMiniMalls search function, so you can turn it off with ch_nosearch = 1;.

Chitika eMiniMalls offer the website publisher the ability to specify their own keywords for an ad, e.g., "plasma screen tv." They even have a script option where we can put a number of keyword sets and have the ad script randomly select the ads to show. Depending on Chitika's inventory of ads to display, they might substitute something similar, for example, an iPod Photo for the iPod Mini, but it matches up pretty well. For example, here's an ad with the keyword set "Canon Digital Rebel XT".

So, the ads are cool looking and not the plain, old text ads or gaudy color monstrosities seen on some site. One of the other nice things is that Chitika pays monthly, 30 days after the revenue month, via Paypal when your balance is over $10. This will probably never be a problem. Google, on the other hand, pays when your account balance is over $100.

Just like Google Adsense and the new Yahoo Publisher Network, the ability to show Chitika ads requires approval of your site for the ads. Similar to Google, once you have one site approved, you can use the ads and your affiliate code on other sites as long as they meed the Terms and Conditions applicable to Chitika eMiniMalls. If you have a content-based site, or even if you have a commercial site, you might want to try Chitika ads.

New Anti-Spam Article October 13th, 2005

"spam" — not the shredded ham product but the email we all love to hate — is everyone's probleml. As individuals, our mailboxes get stuffed each day with advertising for cut-rate pharmaceuticals, for body-enhancing devices and pills, for "business opportunities" and more. Our Internet Service Providers have a worse problem — they have to handle it all!
